The archival heritage of the Canadian Province of the Priests of Saint-Sulpice is a testament to its contribution to the religious life as well as the social, economic, cultural and educational development of Montréal from the 17th century to the present day. These archives are comprised of 1 km of textual material, 75,000 iconographic items, more than 8,000 maps and technical specifications as well as sound and audiovisual recordings.
The Sulpician heritage includes an impressive collection of rare books. This collection also contains books which were part of one of the first private libraries under the French Regime: the Séminaire de Saint-Sulpice library. Other Sulpician libraries were later created. Materials contained in this collection cover the majority of disciplines included in the fields of arts and science.
Throughout its remarkable history and various missions the Society of the Priests of Saint-Sulpice has always emphasized the importance of creation and heritage in its activities. The Univers culturel de Saint-Sulpice’s collections are indeed a tribute to the leading role played by the Priests of Saint-Sulpice in the fields of fine arts, decorative arts, and science.
Today, these collections form the basis of the Artifact Department which counts more than 3,000 inventory tags encompassing all forms of medium from antiquity to the present day.
Whether sacred or secular religious or civil, the works that form the Univers culturel de Saint-Sulpice’s collections represent the physical heritage of the Society of the Priests of Saint-Sulpice.
